Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes Review

Posted in Xbox, Xbox by Ruairi Burns // 25.04.2011

Might & Magic: Clash Hero’s represents a near perfect match of puzzle mechanics and RPG elements which I’m a complete sucker for. It was originally a Nintendo DS game, which as a hand held is the perfect platform for puzzle games but I’m glad Ubisoft have now made it available to download on Xbox 360 as its such a genuinely unique and well thought out game.

The plot follows five young adventurers who have been thrown together in order to stop demons from taking over the world. Its set in the Might & Magic universe but don’t worry, you really don’t have to know anything about it. Its a stand alone story featuring wizards, elves, knights and dark forces. That is all you need.

Regardless of whether you will like the plot or not, its the puzzle game-play that is the real star of the game for me. Once you engage an enemy in battle the camera pans to an overhead view of the battle field which is split into two halves. Your aim is to launch attacks at your opponent from your half to their half and deplete your enemies health. When you create vertical stacks and horizontal rows of at least three same coloured units, you create attackers and defences, respectively.

These are but the basics of combat and from here there are numerous combos and special attacks you can build up and unlock as you progress through the story. Between each battle you can level up you own characters health and strength, as well as earn better special powers.

If you enjoyed the likes of the Puzzle Quest series then you will love this game. The campaign is surprisingly lengthy with perhaps 25+ hours of story to progress though and it also sports a robust multiplayer which can keep you further entertained. Clash of Heroes is a really deep and unique puzzling experience. One of the best you’ll find on Xbox. The role-playing elements are seamlessly mixed with the game play to create one of the most addictive games in my recent memory.

Well as long as it doesn’t have that bullshit boss that Puzzle Quest had.
