The Dreamcast had only Four Games... Right?
Remember the Dream cast!? Of course you do. My memories of Sega’s last venture into the console market are tainted with guilt. I can still picture my Aunty asking me whether she should get my uncle a Playstation or a Dreamcast for his birthday. Quick as a flash I shouted ‘Dreamcast, the graphics are amaaaazing.’ Oh how naïve I was. History has taught me that graphics are not the be-all-end-all of gaming, and that particular Dreamcast is still sitting in an attic gathering dust with a handful of games in a plastic Dunne’s bag.
Ultimately the Dreamcast died with the launch of the Playstation 2 but a weak library of games and a terrible piracy problem all but sealed its fate. There were some good games though: ChuChu Rocket, MDK 2, Skies of Arcadia, Samba DeAamigo and Jet Grind Radio, but are all absent from this so-called collection. Instead we’re given Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5 Part 2 and Sega Bass Fishing.
Let me first say it is very poor form for Sega to just have four games in a ‘collection’ and its even worse seeing as how two of these games (Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi) are already available to download on the Xbox 360. Sonic Adventure is still as rubbish as it always was with weak controls, poor camera work and worse story and although Crazy Taxi was a great hit at the time, it has aged terribly, with the driving mechanic being a lot clunkier than I remembered.
Space Chanel 5 was a pretty good quirky game where you matched dance moves with alien passer-bys to a really weird soundtrack. Many would have fond memories of it, so it baffles me why Sega would put the creepy weird over-the-top sequel on this collection rather than the superior original. Sega Bass Fishing is actually still pretty enjoyable. I remember playing it in college and although its essentially a fishing simulator, there is a nostalgic charm to the sound effects and crappy English voice work
I know I’ve come off sounding very bitter about the whole thing but Sega has left a bad taste in my mouth with this stunt. Its essentially a money grab by pumping out a disk with four mediocre games on it. There was absolutely no attention to detail or care put into it and I would have got rid of the game, only I liked Sega Bass Fishing, but I do realise I might be in the minority on that one. Give this one wide birth and save your money for some other game. Anything is better than this.
