Alan Wake is Really Good

Posted in News, Xbox by Chris Slack // 19.04.2010 // 0

Alan Wake is really good apparently. That is according to Nick Cowen, a reviewer for the Telegraph, who has played through the first 2 episodes so far and wrote on Twitter:

Played through episodes 1 and 2 of Alan Wake. Really, unbelievably good!

Hopefully the remaining episodes are just as good, I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time folks. Here’s hoping it lives up to our expectations.

Now some new screen shots to tide us over.

Roger Ebert: “Video games can never be art”

Posted in News by Stephen Colfer // 18.04.2010 // 2

Earlier in the week Roger Ebert of internet movie critic fame defended this statement with a detailed analyse and highly interesting article that I’d recommend everyone reads. It’s mainly a response to a TED talk given by Kellee Santigo a few years ago which Ebert recommends you watch before hand. I’ve embedded it below. I’ll more than likely write a proper response to Ebert’s ideas later in the week but for now tell us what you think? Are video games art in a primitive cave painting sort of way or can they simply never match up to poetry, music and the like? What is art itself? And why is the child in Ebert’s post so disgruntled with his Gamecube?

The Passing is “out next week”

Posted in News, PC, Xbox by Stephen Colfer // 17.04.2010 // 0

Valve have quietly announced that Left 4 Dead 2′s first DLC is to be released next week on PC and Xbox 360. In honour of this Harmonix have released two songs for Rock Band from the fiction Left 4 Dead band, The Midnight Riders. The Passing DLC is interesting in that it serves as a cross over story between the first and second Left for Dead games. Valve have remained hush hush about how this works exactly though they have shown footage from the later half of the campaign with just the second game’s survivors playing . Here’s their previous press release on the matter:

“Coming out this Spring for Left 4 Dead 2 is the brand new DLC “The Passing”, which contains:

A Wicked Witch Bride!
A Gargantuan M60!
A Slashing Golf Club!
And Introducing The Fallen Survivor!
Meet 3 Left 4 Dead 1 Survivors!
New Game Modes!

Was that a typo? Game Modes? Didn’t we mean Game MODE? Did we mean to include that “S”?!?!?

YES WE DID!”

Note how we only meet THREE Left 4 Dead 1 survivors and ONE fallen survivor.

Left (3+1) Dead. Let the speculation commence! Or you know… just wait a week.

Crysis 2 May Look Better On PS3

Posted in News, PC, PlayStation, Xbox by Chris Slack // 14.04.2010 // 0

Now we all know that the PS3 has more power under the hood that the Xbox 360 (sorry 360 fanboys that’s just the way it is). So it may come as no shock that Crytek had a much easier time getting their new CryEngine 3 running on the PS3 than the Xbox and due to the PS3’s power advantage its getting slightly better performance.Crytek’s business development boss Carl Jones had this to say. “We’re lucky in the fact that we’ve come to the generation slightly later than other people – the ones who were trying to build the first technology and games were surprised at how different the PS3 was. We took our time and worked out the right way to approach it.”

At the moment, we’re getting slightly more performance from PS3 compared to 360. I’m very confident that products using CryEngine 3 are going to come out as the best looking, or at least in the top three, on every platform.

Whether any real difference in graphics quality and frame rates between the PS3 and 360 versions exists remains to be seen. With technology becoming more advanced every year, perhaps this is as far as the ageing tech inside the 360 can go, whereas the PS3 may have a little bit more to give before it reaches its “Crysis” point. See what I did there.

Doesn’t matter anyway the PC version is going to kick both console version’s asses off.
